Regenerative Agriculture, what is it?
Regenerative Agriculture is a method that rebuilds the soil, ecosystem, and allows nature to heal.
Some methods used include; permaculture design, nitrogen fixing cover crops and trees, tree guilds, pollinator flowers & plants, using chickens for pest control and compost fertilizer, native plants, rainwater catching & use, companion planting & more.
The idea is to work with nature to rebuild the soil. By using native plants & cover crops, watering needs will decrease over time. Making compost from organic kitchen scraps & chicken fertilizer puts nutrients in the soil to grow healthy & thriving plants.
Everything is energy, what you put in your body matters.
How did we begin & where are we going?
I have been gardening & researching regenerative agriculture since 2020. The world shut down & we started a garden. I immediately dove into permaculture design & it's benefits, rainwater catching & more. We moved out of the city & got to work. The first thing we did was to observe the land. Where did rainwater gather? Where was it more shaded during the hottest times of day? What types of animals & pests would we be working with?
By observing the land, we were able to make a plan. The next thing we did was to plant a few fruit trees. You want to let the trees grow strong roots the first couple of years, so plan on taking off the little fruits that start to grow, to allow the tree to send it's energy to the roots.
Then we put up a fence to keep the dog out. Rabbit droppings & chicken droppings are great for plants, but you don't want your dog using the area for a restroom.
Then the shrubs went in, cover crops, and more & more medicinal plants each year.
Our next goal is to add a large industrial greenhouse to expand our growing abilities, have specialized plants & create a community program.
